long Term Benefits of Recreational Dance
1. Increase Strength and Overall Health
Dancing is exercise so, naturally, it will assist in strengthening your bones and muscles. As the human body gets stronger, we gain more energy to push through movement. High levels of physical exercise can help prevent illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease and reduce the risk of osteoporosis as your bones become stronger.
2. Boost Memory
Since learning dance routines requires memorizing various sequences and steps, our brains encourage nerve cell growth which helps improve memory. Dancing utilizes several brain functions at once: emotions, kinesthetic, etc. Utilizing all these concepts can increase neural activity—preventing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
3. Develop Time Management/Organization Skills
Juggling school and other activities, teaches dancers how to commit to a schedule, be organized and manage prioritizes. These are skills that are detrimental to college, employment, and life in general!
Time Management/ Organizational Skills Developed:
-
Prioritize: Focus on pressing tasks and schedule additional duties for other days.
-
Important and Urgent: Complete tasks/attend events that must be done right away.
-
Important But Not Urgent: Tasks that seem important but can wait, must be pushed to a different deadline.
-
Plan ahead: Purchase a calendar and list all the tasks/commitments that must be attended to, and organize them onto certain days.
4. Reduce Stress
Dance can be a very therapeutic and healthy way for people to channel any feelings they may be experiencing. People that suffer from depression, can reduce the amount of cortisol their brain produces (the hormone that is associated with stress) by associating with music, movement and a positive environment to express themselves. As children continue to dance, they build confidence and self-esteem which further reduces depressed feelings.
5. Teamwork
As we know, there’s no I in Team. Dancers learn how to work as a team by asking questions, encouraging others and working together. Teammates rely on each other to succeed, if a fellow student is lagging behind, children learn to work with one another to achieve their goals.
