Fun Recreational Dance Classes In Novi, Michigan
For over 60 years, Sheryl’s School of Dance has taught thousands of children in the dancing industry, specifically in the competition sector. Our instructors have studied this subject extensively, staying up-to-date with all of the current trends.
The students can expect to learn a high level of complex dance choreography and stage presence. Our dance teachers are national competitive winners themselves, and they expect a high degree of excellence in each and every student in the competition program.
All are accomplished choreographers winning numerous awards for their efforts. Many of them are active members of Dance Masters of America and the Cecchetti Council of America, certified in the subjects they teach. Our teachers all share a passion for dance and encourage love and joy for the beautiful art in each student.

Competition Dance Requirements
-
Requirements: To be eligible for Company membership, you must have an extensive background in tap, jazz, ballet, or participated in our level 1 pre-line. Members of our company dance between 4-15 hours per week.
-
Auditions: Auditions occur at the start of every new Company year (usually in August, but some exceptions may apply). By auditioning, you agree to accept placement by your teachers in the Company routines that are best suited for you. The final decision is made by the choreographer/teacher.
-
Placement: Members that join company are placed in a Tap and Jazz routine first. This requires a minimum of 2 routines per dancer (if you are a pre-line member you can elect to only participate in 1 routine the first year of company.) Once you are placed in Tap and Jazz, you may try out for additional routines.
Benefits of Competitive Dancing
1. Experience
Performing at dance competitions provides a dancer with a fully rounded experience. They learn to commit to rehearsal schedules, work hard in class and take the steps learned from the studio onto the big stage. Competition experience also teaches dancers how to connect with the audience, get comfortable under big lights, receive critiques from
judges and focus through their nerves and adrenaline.
2. Rise to Challenges
When you stay dedicated and focused on winning or performing your best, you will be learning how to rise to the challenges for your teammates and yourself.
3. Learn Proper Response to Feedback
Children will learn how to receive feedback from judges after performing a dance routine. These can include a range of topics, such as: constructive criticism, technical elements that were missed, positive talk and things the students did well.
4. Organization
Dancers will learn the practical skills of being organized and responsible. If a dancer is in multiple routines, they’ll have different costumes, props and make-up for every routine. They’ll need to multi-task by keep tracking of performance schedules and stay organized when getting dressed prior to the performance.
